The Environmental Code, consolidated version of 7 May 2010, regulating all people's rights of access to information about the environment held, received or established by public authorities.

Directive on re-use of public data 2003, came  into force in the French legal system in 2005.

The 2002 Aarhus Convention. The Aarhus Convention lays down three fundamental rights for citizens and associations representing them: access to information, participation in the decision making process, access to justice. It also deals specifically with two major transparency issues:  the question of GMO and information on emission and transfer of pollutants (PRTR Convention).

Adopted on 25 June 1998 by the United Nations' Economic Commission for Europe ( UNECE), the convention came into force on 30 October 2001.

France ratified the Aarhus Convention on 8 July 2002. It came into force on 6 October 2002.

The CADA (Access to Administrative Documents Commission) is an independent public service  with a consultative role, charged with monitoring the application of laws dealing with access to and re-use of data.
