17300 places in student halls of residence in Paris

Faced with students' need for accommodation, 4,300 places have been made serviceable since 2001. This new student accommodation brought the total number of places up to 11,400 in 2012, to be found either in university halls of residence, council run halls of residence or those run by the higher education body the CROUS. These 11,400 places have benefited from public funding and have been included in the SRU inventory of social housing.

These subsidized places are to be added to the 5,900 places in private halls of residence (denominational associations, in-house accommodation for the Grandes Écoles or residences linked to tax-exempt property investments).  This brings the total number of places in student halls of residence in Paris up to  17,300.
These 17,300 places correspond mainly to two types of single rooms: on the one hand furnished rooms, measuring 10 square metres, with collective areas (kitchen, bathroom and toilets and work areas) and on the other hand rooms of 25 to 35 square metres with a kitchenette and bathroom and toilet facilities included.
The efforts made by local government to increase the offer of residential student accommodation continue as the Paris Local Housing Programme has stated the objective of creating 4,000 new places in the period from 2011 to 2016. This note summarises the already existing and new council accommodation available between 2001 and 2012.
