Evolution of urban expressways and motorways in Grand Paris – Study of the road network at the heart of the conurbation

Evolution of urban expressways and motorways in Grand Paris
The expressway and motorway network plays an essential role in the transport system in the metropolis. Major challenges for its future evolution include optimising the way it is used and integrating it into the urban fabric.
This study of the road network at the heart of the conurbation is being carried out in partnership with DRIEA-DiRIF, (Ile-de- France Regional and Interdepartmental Department of Facilities and Development-Ile-de-France Department of Roads), the SGP (Société du Grand Paris), the City of Paris, the Regional Councils of Val-de-Marne, Seine-Saint-Denis and Hauts-de-Seine, as well as the Ile-de-France Region and STIF (Department of Public Highways and Transport).
The study was started in mid-2012 and has unfolded in several stages: a shared diagnostic, an analysis of faults and failures, defining projects and exploratory discussions on the subject of connections, and finally themed workshops.
At the end of 2014, the managers and key players of the main network came together for a workshop on motorways and expressways.
Possible development options were sketched out and organised into 4 strategic areas of focus forming a framework on which to build for the future:
  • Towards an urban integration and improved communication with the territories traversed;
  • Towards an optimisation of the main network and new modes of use;
  • Towards enhancing the larger landscape and taking account of environmental pollution;
  • Towards efficient projects and improving the use of land which has been overlooked.
