Two-home occupancy concerns mainly young and retired Parisians
More people divide their time between two homes in Ile-de-France than in the rest of the country. 14% of adults in Ile-de-France and one Parisian in four as against one in ten inhabitants of the rest of the country live like this.
The proportion of people occupying two homes is higher during term times, at the start of professional life and on retirement, but the reasons for this vary at the different stages of people's lives. A second home allows those under 30 to maintain a link with their families, and this is the case for one in two young Parisians. As people get older they increasingly say that they have two homes for leisure or holiday purposes. This is the case for three out of four Parisians over 60. For those in full swing of professional activity, aged between 30 and 59, a second home is used for more varied reasons: mainly for leisure but also family and work.
Whereas the inhabitants of Ile-de-France are looking above all for a lovely place in the countryside to relax in, those from the countryside who have a second home in Ile-de-France do so primarily for work reasons.
