Paris Projet n°36-37 - Urban renovation and the Olympic Games

This issue presents the urban studies on Paris and the heart of the urban agglomeration that were carried out when the public interest group GIP Paris 2012 was preparing  the candidate file for Paris in their bid to host the 2012 Olympic Games. It deals particularly with the question of the urban legacy of the Games.

The Paris bid acted as a veritable catalyst, combining the energies and the means to carry out the study.  As was the case with the constructions and urban legacy remaining after the Paris bid for the Games in 1992, or when the Universal Exhibition was hosted in Paris in 1989, the studies undertaken for this Olympic adventure cast a new light on the potential of certain forgotten or abandoned areas, mainly located in the North-East of Paris. By revealing such sites and speeding up projects, these studies assure a new urban dynamism in the heart of the agglomeration that should bring real improvements to living conditions in the Paris suburbs.

Many of the projects developed in the Paris bid are still relevant today: firstly, the one in North-East Paris, but also the development of the residential area around a park in the Batignolles district of the 17th arrondissement, the  extension of the circular tramway to the North of Paris, the requalification of the the inner ring road around Paris -Boulevards des Maréchaux- or again, the development of the Bois de Boulogne. The effective completion of projects such as the Swimming stadium in Aubervilliers or the theatre near to Porte de la Chapelle is still being considered.

Finally, the capitalisation of work carried out at this time in areas such as urban development, transport and the environment could make an important contribution to the current debate on the development of the Ile-de-France Region in revising its master plan.

Over and above the conclusion of the sporting event, the legacy of the Games is surely that major strategic issues in the North-East of the heart of the city are brought into perspective to ensure the harmonious development and future of the capital region.
