Feasibility study for a metropolitan Vélib’
The VLS service (bike share system) now has 8 years-worth of feedback on Paris and over 6 years in the communes bordering Paris, within a perimeter of 1.5km. The placing of the bike terminals was decided on following a study by Apur in 2006, based on a map of the demand for particular journeys for a variety of reasons (home, work, shopping, leisure). This study also took into account the leveling required, fundamental to making the terminals accessible.
9 years after this study, and in addition to the work undertaken within the framework of the road network study and the Station Neighbourhoods Observatory, it seems useful, on the eve of the re-launch of a call for tender for a bike share system (VLS), to take stock of the present system and think about the prospect of a metropolitan Velib’.
This study is organised in two parts:
  • An overview which compares the process carried out in 2006 with observations on the way it has worked in reality in 2014 and 2015 based on the hypotheses of demand for journeys made in 2006. This section concludes with an updated cartography of journey demand, carried out at the level of the Metropolis.
  • A section looking into the future which suggests installing a public bike system for the Metropolis including on the one hand the provision of a bike share system in dense and mixed sectors where it would be justified, and on the other a longer-term bike hire system for the other sectors.
