Follow-up of changes in businesses on 56 shopping streets in Paris – Note BDRues

A follow-up of changes in businesses carried out within the framework of BDRues research into ground floor business premises was undertaken in June 2013 on 56 shopping streets selected within an area defined by the City of Paris, the Paris Ile-de-France Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Apur. A total of around 11,300 premises were identified of which almost 10,000 were occupied by shops and commercial services, i.e. over 88%.
This note sums up the changes observed between June 2012 and June 2013 using the results of field surveys carried out on the terrain.
The main results worth noting from this study are on the one hand the stability of the number of premises identified on the 56 shopping streets and on the other the slight decrease in the number of vacant premises (-36 units). More precisely, there has been a slight increase in shops and commercial services (+47 establishments) amongst which are shops connected with fashion (+33 establishments), cafés and restaurants (+30 establishments), a continued increase in businesses connected to health and beauty (+25 establishments) and an increase in food shops (+24 shops).
On the other hand, it has been observed that there are fewer cultural and leisure outlets (-54 establishments) and stores dealing in interior decoration (-17 shops). The stabilisation in the number of vacant premises observed between 2011 and 2012 has given way to a slight decrease in their number (-36 units).
