Follow-up of changes in businesses on 56 shopping streets in Paris – Note BDRues 2014

Follow-up of changes in businesses on 56 shopping streets in Paris – BDRues 2014
The way businesses are changing was the subject of a follow-up survey in June 2014 within the framework of BDRues research into ground floor business premises on 56 selected shopping streets within an area defined by the City of Paris, the Paris Ile-de-France Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Apur.  Around 11,100 premises were identified, of which almost 9,900 were occupied by shops and commercial services, i.e. about 89%.
This note sums up the changes observed between June 2013 and June 2014 using the results of field surveys carried out in the area.
The main results worth noting from this study are on the one hand a decrease in the number of identified premises on the 56 shopping streets and on the other a slight increase in the number of vacant premises (+23 units). A closer analysis of the results shows a decrease in shops and commercial services (-101 establishments), in particular clothes shops (-74 establishments), business services and agencies (-25 establishments) and interior decoration (-12 shops).
Certain business activities have stayed stable, such as those connected to health and beauty, DIY/gardening and car and motorbike accessories. On the other hand, a small increase has been observed in the number of catering outlets (+13 establishments), cultural and leisure outlets (+7 establishments) and food shops (+6 shops). The number of vacant premises has slightly increased in 2014 (+23 units) following two years, 2011 – 2013, during which numbers were observed to decline.
