Paris / Rio de Janeiro Cooperation - reconnaissance mission - Cooperation on a sustainable city

Paris / Rio de Janeiro Cooperation
In the context of the “decentralised cooperation” section of its work programme, Apur carried out a mission in Rio in December 2015 organised around its commitment to optimising the climate and environmental aspects in the development of a sustainable city.
This renewed cooperation dealt more specifically with the activity in public spaces brought about by the different uses they are put to: social, economic and cultural, with the aim of rendering the historical centre of Rio more attractive and more pleasant to live in. Particular care has also to be taken of Rio’s exceptional architectural, landscape and environmental heritage.
In the special context of the 2016 Summer Olympic Games, the City of Rio has been carrying out several major urban projects which affect the general organisation of the territory as well as each of its neighbourhoods. This urban recovery of Rio culminated in the creation of the “Museu do Amanhã” (The Museum of  Tomorrow) in the port neighbourhood, which was inaugurated on Friday 18th December 2015.
The mission, carried out with the support of the Institut Français in Brazil, had three main objectives :
  • To understand Rio’s urban dynamic generated by the coming Olympic Games.
  • To establish a diagnostic of uses of public space in the city’s central neighbourhoods instigated by this general urban dynamic.
  • To define the cooperation project: First steps in defining possible new uses of the city centre, in order to make it more attractive/ define a calendar, deadlines, key players.
This first mission will be followed by others in 2016, which will also be on the theme of issues linked to public space.
