On 1st January 2012 the population of the Greater Paris -Grand Paris- metropolis, made up of Paris and the three departments of the inner ring of suburbs -La Petite Couronne-, was 6,707,612 compared with the 2007 figure of 6,542,670. The metropolitan population had therefore increased by 164,942 between 2007 and 2012, an average of 32,988 inhabitants per year or an annual growth of 0,5 %.
Overall numbers rose more slowly than during the 1999-2007 period, when the annual rate of increase was 0,7 %.
In Paris the legally registered population was established at 2,240,621 on 1st January 2012. This figure showed an increase of  47,591 inhabitants compared with 2,193,030 inhabitants legally registered in 2007.
The population of the three departments in the Petite Couronne grew at a much slower rate than from 1999 to 2007. Within Paris the increase continued at the same rate as between 1999 and 2007 but signs such as a gradual drop in births announced a slowing down of the population growth. The annual rate of increase of the population was fairly homogeneous in the surrounding departments at 0,5 %.
The rise in population accompanied a growth in the housing stock and a fall in unoccupied housing units, particularly in Paris.
The center of the conurbation continued to be an attractive territory for young adults. In 2011, 144,504  Parisians had lived in Paris for less than a year, that is 6.5 % of the population. Among these newcomers 38 % were young people aged between 15 and 24, many more than in the 3 departments of the inner ring of suburbs (20%), than in the outer suburbs (18%) and in Metropolitan France (24%). Simultaneously, following the economic crisis which came about in the of autumn 2008, employment in Paris first rose and then fell as a consequence of the situation. At the end of 2012 there were 1,878,694 jobs in Paris.
Paris as always had more jobs than working residents,  with 68 %  of Parisians working in the capital. Paris had the largest proportion of people in stable jobs within the Ile-de France with a smaller proportion of its working population commuting outside Paris. Ammounting to 31,5 % of Parisians working outside Paris.
The capital had by far the highest number of incoming commuters within the region with 31.1 % of Ile-de-France's employed population working in Paris. The proportion of workers traveling into Paris was 57.5 % which meant that the majority of jobs within the capital were done by non Parisians.
