Preliminary metropolitan plan for crematoria in Ile-de-France – Initial factors
This study, undertaken in 2014 and 2015, is part of a framework of legislative proposals aimed at creating regional schemes concerning the crematoria taken over by the Senate in May 2014 and May 2015. The study was carried out with the support of the Paris Region Intercommunal Funerary Syndicate (@SIFUREP) and aims to establish a diagnostic of deaths and how cremation is developing, as well as the distribution and level of activity of existing or projected crematoria in Ile-de-France (parts 1 and 2).
The 3rd section of the study also defines the factors to include when drawing up a master plan for crematoria in Ile-de-France and what conditions to take into account when building new crematoria (siting and accessibility, quality of reception and services offered).
This preliminary outline of a metropolitan plan for crematoria in Ile-de-France has revealed a disparity in how cremation is developing and a significant variation in the activity of existing facilities.
It also confirms that the creation of a new crematorium will have repercussions on existing facilities; the criteria for a new site should therefore not be limited to the local area.
The creation of new crematoria, or the extension of existing facilities should also include qualitative criteria which will take into account the reception conditions for families (programme, urban and architectural integration), the quality of services offered to families having priority over financial profit.
