This map shows the proportion of households who live in overcrowded conditions, on a sub-municipal scale (IRIS : groups of housing-blocks for statistical purposes).
A dwelling is considered to be over-occupied when the number of rooms is inferior to the number of occupants (2 people in a bedsit, 3 people in a 2 room apartment, etc.).
This definition mechanically excludes single people and consequently, the proportion of overcrowded housing is calculated by comparing the number of over-occupied dwellings with the number of dwellings occupied by two or more people (and not with the whole of the occupied housing stock). When using this definition the percentage of over-occupied dwellings reaches 23% in Paris and 24% in Grand Paris Metropolis (among households of 2 or more people). These data are the result of exploiting the detailed file of the population census.
