Present day annuel gas and electricity consumption and district heating per capita in Paris

This map represents the (final) energy consumption per capita for all uses in Paris in 2020. It was made on the basis of real energy consumption data (electricity, gas, heating networks) on the Iris network level (the overall statistics of approximately 2000 inhabitants) in the residential sector of Paris in 2020 (source: SDES), cross referenced with the last population count (source: Insee). It involves data giving the final energy (billed consumption) and not primary energy (which takes into account energy transformation losses).

Apart from the diversity of situations observed, these data show that a Parisian uses on average about 5,400 kWh of final energy per year (heating, hot water, cooking, lighting, electrical appliances) compared with an average of 6,400 kWh per person living in Ile-de-France and 9,000 kWh by an Ile-de-France resident living in a detached house.

The preponderance of collective housing, the extremely compact Parisian urban form as well as the effects of heat islands explain the moderate level of consumption seen in Paris.

There exists a correlation between the level of energy consumption and the level of income that can be explained mainly by a larger dwelling surface area per inhabitant among the more affluent members of the population, and perhaps also due to the use of the more energy consuming levels of comfort. More space to heat implies a greater consumption of energy.

In Paris, one can estimate, from a sample selection of buildings, that the average consumption of a Parisian with a higher level of income (over 42,220 euros per annum and per consumption unit is approximately 7,000 kWh compared with 4,000 kWh for a Parisian with an average or below average income (less than 31,665 euros per annum and per consumption unit).

Alongside this, the map shows the effects of efforts made to thermally rehabilitate a part of the Parisian building stock, particularly the social housing stock found principally in peripheral districts.
