This map shows areas where within 5 minute on foot one can access 3 main day-to-day shops: baker’s, chemist’s and newspaper/book shop. In the blue areas inhabitants have access to all 3 shops a 5 minute walk away, in the dark pink areas, inhabitants have access to 2 out of the 3 types of shops, in the pale pink areas inhabitant have access to only one of the 3 types, finally in the grey areas inhabitants are further than 5 minutes walk away from any one of these types of shops. The white areas indicate woods, very large facilities and are not inhabited.
Within the metropolis, the Parisian population benefits from a very complex network of local shops. Very few (4%) have to walk more than 5 minutes to reach one. In other territories, between 1/5 to 1/3 of the population have access to the 3 types of shops and more than half the population can reach one of these shops within five minutes. However, a significant part of the population (almost a 1/3) have to walk more than 5 minutes to reach one of these shops. Approximately 20% of the population is in this situation in Grand Paris Seine Ouest, Paris Ouest La Défense, Boucle Nord de Seine, Plaine Commune and Est Ensemble and more than 40 % in Paris Terres d’Envol, Grand Paris Grand Est and Grand Paris Sud Est Avenir. One can see on the map that certain municipalities on the periphery of Paris are as well served as the capital itself, this is the case in Boulogne-Billancourt, Vanves, Malakoff, Montrouge, Charenton, Vincennes, Saint-Mandé, Le Pré Saint-Gervais, Clichy, Levallois-Perret and Neuilly-sur-Seine. The further out one goes from Paris, the longer one has to walk to reach one of these shops. However the municipalities of Saint-Denis, Aubervilliers and Romainville are not very well provided for. Urban projects underway can provide an opportunity for altering the way in which ground floor shops are established and located.
