Wage disparities between women and men in Paris

Map - Wage disparities between women and men in Paris

The average wage of Parisian women is 22 euros net/hour, which is a 21% lower than that of Parisian men who earn, on average, 27.80 euros/hour. Parisian women’s average wage is nevertheless 1.6 time higher than the average rate for women in France as a whole (14.20 euros/hour), it is even higher than the average wage of men in Metropolitan France (16.80 euros net /hour).

Gender pay disparities differs from district to district. The more well-off districts (6th, 7th, 8th et 16th) are where the gap is the greatest. In the 7th district, men earn, on average, almost twice as much as women. In certain districts (3rd, 9th, 16th) the gender gap is widening. Conversely, the gap narrows in lower income districts where the average rate of pay is not so high. In the 12th, 13th, 18th, 19th and 20th districts, the average woman’s wage is 2 to 10% lower than that of men.

Wage disparities between women and men partly reflect other inequalities, particularly access to different types of jobs and categories of work. It is within the highest paid categories that one finds the greatest differences. Parisian women holding managerial posts earn an average hourly wage that is 24% lower than Parisian men who have managerial jobs. The gap is not so great in other socio-professional sectors. The gender wage gap exists in other cities but is less pronounced, particularly in those where there is a lower proportion of managerial jobs.

In certain municipalities adjacent to Paris, where the average rate of pay is lower, women earn higher net salaries than men (Aubervilliers, Montreuil, Pantin, Saint-Denis).

Age is also a factor which contributes to pay inequalities between women and men. Parisian women over 50 earn 32% less than Parisian men of the same age. The gap is narrower among people between 26 and 50, but remains significant: with women earning 15% less than men. It is among the younger population that wage disparities are the lowest, women under 25 earn 10% less than men of the same age.
