1.8 million inhabitants in the Greater Paris -Grand Paris- live in cramped housing

Over-occupancy in housing and more generally the comfort of housing has emerged as a major social and human issue at a time when the health crisis linked to COVID-19 and the resulting lockdown obliges 67 million people in France, 7 million of whom live in Grand Paris, to be confined to their homes.

In 2016, in Métropole du Grand Paris (MGP), 434,000 households of two people or more lived in housing units that were too small in relation to the size of the household. With over 30% of overcrowded accommodation, Plaine Commune and Est Ensemble are the areas most affected by this type of bad housing. In Paris, the level of over-occupied housing is slightly lower than that observed in the metropolis but the capital accommodates almost a third of over-occupied housing units in MGP. The people most affected by over-occupancy often live in rented apartments, are couples with children or are lower income households.
