The Night of Solidarity is an anonymous and objective count of homeless people which has been carried out each year since 2018 by the City of Paris with numerous institutional, non-profit association and volunteer partners.
The initiative aims to gain better knowledge of the geographical whereabouts, profiles and needs of people who have no accommodation solution, enabling pubic policies to be adapted in response. Apur has accompanied the initiative since it began and analyses the results.
On the night of 25th to 26th January 2024, the seventh Night of Solidarity counted 3,491 homeless people in Paris, which represents an increase of 476 people compared with the count carried out in January 2023 (+16%). The people met were mainly found in the streets of Paris, but a quarter of them were in other types of places (train stations, metro or RER stations, carparks, embankments of the Péripherique ring road, campsites, woods etc.). The majority were men (88 % of the people counted).
Low levels of access to aid, services and facilities were observed, similarly to observations made on previous Nights of Solidarity. The priority daily needs remained close to results in previous years, with a greater need for storing belongings, being assisted in procedures and being able to wash clothes.
In addition to analysing the responses to the questionnaires, the 2024 study includes three main focus points : on homeless women encountered during the various different Nights of Solidarity, on the increasing numbers of young people met on the night in January 2024, on the results of the experimental summer edition in June 2023 compared with the winter results in 2023 and 2024 and on the results of the Night of Solidarity in Paris compared with results obtained within the framework of the national operation.
This seventh Night of Solidarity was carried out alogside a third Metropolital Night of Solidarity coordinated by the Greater Paris - Grand Paris Metropolis - in 32 voluntary municipal Communes. The results of this operation are the subject of a specific study.
