CDG Express: developing railway lines running from Porte de la Chapelle

When the Charles de Gaulle (CDG) Express starts running in 2016 it will provide services from the Gare de L’Est to Charles de Gaulle Airport. The East - North railway link is planned to be established at Porte de la Chapelle, which forms the junction for large urban operations, implying a major impact in the future of the whole sector (Paris Nord-Est connecting  Paris to north-eastern Greater Paris, tramway T3, etc).
The project’s Public Utility Declaration (DUP) was delivered on the basis of an elevated railway through the areas leading to the station, in spite of reservations expressed by the Commission of Enquiry. The City of Paris, which has always been militantly in favour of an underground solution in order to maintain the possibility of requalifying the site and limiting pollution for inhabitants living nearby therefore handed the DUP on to the Council of State to guarantee that their demands be taken into account.
On the demand and the co-financing of the City of Paris and the Ile-de-France Regional Department of infrastructures, Apur carried out a study, over the last quarter of 2009, on the possibilities of railway tracks running from the Porte de la Chapelle, with the technical support of the engineering consulting firm INGEROP, exploring 5 different routes.
The results of the study led to Apur recommending cut-and-cover, underground lines using the circular railway line -La Petite Ceinture- as the best response to the urban requalification objectives; it is also the least complex solution and one of the most economic.
In addition, further study carried out in February 2010 on the demand of DREIF and RFF aimed in particular, to add details about the phasing of implementing the Petite Ceinture solution in relation to the progress of the basic solution.
