Car-sharing in the Greater Paris - Grand Paris Metropolis -

Options and towns with services

In a context where mobility services are developing, several local authorities have put in place, or are thinking about establishing car-sharing services as an alternative to personally owned vehicles. Apur was commissioned to carry out this study by Grand Paris Metropolis, in order to gain greater awareness of users and to analyse the opportunities for development.

Several types of car-sharing options exist (freefloating or round trips), 6 companies operate in Grand Paris Metropolis and car-sharing is gradually increasing bit by bit, as opportunities arise and local policy objectives evolve. At the beginning of 2025, car-sharing services were available in 21 municipalities. In 2024, three others launched Calls for Expressions of Interest (CEI), aimed at developing this type of activity. The study describes the present-day situation of car-sharing on offer in Grand Paris. It also looks at numerous services running in other metropolises (Brussels, Lyon, Nantes) and analyses data on the use of car-sharing in Grand Paris, as well as the typical profiles of people who currently use the service.

Although car-sharing seems to be an interesting option, with less financial impact for people who only occasionally use a car, it remains restricted by psychological and cultural parameters (attachment to ownership, not knowing the car borrowed, fear of non-availability, lack of offers and prices). It would therefore be pertinent to accompany this mobility service and to facilitate its development.
