Attendance and profiles of visitor to bathing sites in the Seine

Feedback on the first summer season in 2025

The summer of 2025 saw a huge revival of swimming in the rivers Seine and Marne. Banned in the Seine in1923, but still widely practised, bathing stopped completely in the 1960s due to the deteriorating water quality. Based on a survey conducted with the City of Paris and site operators, Apur analyses the number of visitors and the characteristics of people who used the bathing sites during the summer of 2025.

Three natural bathing sites opened in Paris and four in Marne. The sites Bras Marie (Paris Centre), Quai de Bercy (12th) and Bras de Grenelle (15th) were highly successful (100,000 bathers at the three sites on the Seine in Paris and 50,000 at the two sites in Maisons-Alfort and Joinville-le-Pont). Analysis of the results of the survey carried out among visitors in Paris reveals a mixed, predominantly local public (neighbouring districts and municipalities), while also welcoming visitors from other areas: attendees were 59% Parisian, 21% from Ile-de-France (outside Paris), 6% from other provinces and 13% of international tourists. Responses from the public highlight the heritage quality of the settings, the motivation of cooling off and swimming in fresh water and the organisation of the safety and surveillance measures put in place on the sites.

The three Parisian sites and four sites open on the Marne are expected to reopen next summer. The Bras Marie site will be relocated in 2026 to allow for longer bathing hours throughout the day. Other sites are being considered by local authorities among 34 potential sites. Certain wish in the short term, to offer permanent bathing sites during the summer, others in the medium term, could propose gradually developing identified sites, initially giving priority to swimming events or even water sport activities.
