2,165,423 inhabitants in Paris on 1st January 2019

The population of Paris decreased on a yearly average of -0.5% between 2013 and 2019. On a metropolitan scale, the population grew on a yearly average of + 0.3%. Areas where the population grew most were Plaine Commune, Est Ensemble and Paris Terres d’Envol.

Each year, INSEE publishes the new French population figures, municipality by municipality. At the end of December 2021, the 2019 yearly figures were published. This note provides an initial commentary on the 1st January 2019 census results for Paris and Grand Paris Metropolis.  

THE DECREASING POPULATION CONTINUES AT THE SAME RATE IN PARIS

On the 1st January 2019, 2,165,423 people were living in Paris. This number shows a decrease of 64,200 inhabitants compared with the 2013 population of 2,229,621.

The population of Paris has been decreasing since 2012. Between 2013 and 2019, the drop was of 10,700 inhabitants per year. Between 2008 and 2013, the population rose by 3,700 per yearly average. The decline observed since 2012 can be explained mainly by the widening of the apparent migratory deficit¹, between these two periods, it rose from - 0.6% to - 1.1% on average per year.
