The census on Parisian shops and services was carried out in October 2020, for the eighth time since 2000, on the initiative of the City of Paris, the Paris Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Apur. It contributes to work carried out by the Observatory of Parisian Economy.

At the time of the last census, Paris counted 61,541 shops and commercial services, which represent an extremely dense commercial network compared with other large cities in France.

The 2020 census revealed that trends underway for many years continued. One can note a slight reduction in the number of shops and commercial services between 2017 and 2020 (-1.9%) whereas between 2014 and 2017 they remained stable. The sectors which changed the most were shops selling personal belongings such as ready-to-wear clothes, shoe shops, jewellery, … which dropped significantly while restaurants, the health, well being and beauty sectors and organic shops continued to expand. As to wholesale outlets, they have tended to disappear.

The survey was carried out during the month of October 2020 in the very particular context of the health crisis linked to Covid-19. At the time, apart from bars, cinemas and night-clubs, all commercial services were open. The results of the survey made it possible to become aware of the initial consequences of this health and economic crisis, which is still ongoing in 2021.
