In 2005, 460,000 employees living in Paris and the inner ring of suburbs earned an annual income of under 7,830 €, i.e. less than 650€ per month.
Their low incomes result from limited-term employment. Young people and women are frequently employed for short periods or on a part-time basis and are therefore more likely to earn low incomes. Low-salaried employees often have unskilled, low-wage jobs in the personal or business services sector. A majority of them live in the north and centre of the Paris area.
Example: a 23-year old woman had two jobs in succession as a part-time sales assistant in ready-to-wear clothes shops. During this period, she topped up her salary by working 3 hours a week for a local authority. She worked for seven months and earned an overall income of 4,730€.
