Apur'Café #17: Evolving needs for materials on building sites: the example of concrete

Apur'Café © Apur

The construction and renovation dynamics in Greater Paris - Grand Paris - remain high as 2024 and 2030 approach. Approximately, 36 million m² are to be built or rehabilitated between now and 2024. This represents a major challenge in the evolution of building materials which are increasingly carbon-free.

Indeed, to avoid the scarcity of certain materials such as natural aggregates and sand, the main raw materials in the construction and public works sector, and necessary resources for producing ready-to-use concrete, Apur, together with its partners, wished to study how material requirements are evolving in the construction and public works sector, and particularly concrete, with regard to new emerging construction materials.

The Apur Café is an opportunity for presenting:

  • an estimate of the surface area to be built on in the years to come in the various territories,
  • an estimate of the quantity of materials needed with the current production of concrete in the Grand Paris Metropolis, as well as scenarios for increasing the use of wood in construction from 10 to 30%,
  • and finally, the conditions of acceptability necessary for maintaining a network of concrete plants in a dense urban environment along the edges of the waterways (the Seine and Canals).
