Cycling has become more and more part of the urban landscape of Grand Paris Metropolis. Be it recreational, a daily means of transport, for one-off journeys on self-service bikes or travelling longer distances, bike riding has become increasingly popular since 2010. However, the health crisis in 2020 stands out as a turning point for biking, both from the point of view of cyclists and public authorities.

The Government - which in 2018 set itself the target of tripling the modal share of cycling for everyday journeys from 3% to 9% by 2024 - local authorities and public bodies have responded to these new needs by defining and implementing cycling plans that deal both with the cycle path infrastructure and the associated services linked to cycling (parking, repairs, hire, etc.) thus making it easier, more comfortable and safer.

Major projects are also contributing to this dynamic. Within the heritage framework of the 2024 Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games the “Olympistes” cycle paths are planned, that will particularly promote links between Paris and Seine-Saint-Denis. The Grand Paris Express, whose first stations are due to open in 2024 is also presented as a multimodal project that will organise cross-modal transfer at stations, particularly for bicycles.

The aim of this atlas is to review Grand Paris Metropolis in 2023, in terms of its cycling facilities and services for cyclists with a particular focus on Grand Paris Express station neighbourhoods. It shows the 4,017 km of existing cycle paths as well as the 2,158 km of planned cycle routes in Grand Paris. There are also the 15,000 parking facilities, with a capacity of over 160,000 parking spaces. The current and future developments around Grand Paris Express stations are also taken into account which can potentially be of great benefit to the 4.4 million people living within a 3 km radius of them.
