Changes in commercial activity in Paris – 2014 survey of Parisian shops and high street businesses and 2011-2014 developments

2014 survey of Parisian shops and high street businesses

A new survey of shops and services outlets in Paris, carried out in April 2014, was put in place by the City of Paris, the Paris Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Apur. Over 62,000 commercial outlets were listed showing their presence to be extremely dense, especially when compared with other city centres in France as well as with London.

This inventory highlights the changes which had taken place in the commercial fabric since the  previous  survey. One can see a slight increase in the number of retailers (+,3% per annum) which indicates a reverse tendency to prior surveys. The number of businesses dealing with health and personal care went up, particularly opticians. Fast food restaurants also increased as did the number of small supermarkets. There were fewer wholesale outlets located in certain neighborhoods in the east of Paris and in  the Sedaine Popincourt area where numbers had previously risen.  A drop in the number of retail outlets in the furnishings and household appliances sector could also be seen as well as  in culture and leisure linked businesses; Finally vacancies on ground floor premises fell during the 2011 – 2014 period, amounting proportionally to 9.2%.
