Converting offices into housing in Paris

Transforming offices into Parisian residences
This study aims to supply the statistical conclusions concerning the transformation of offices in Paris into housing, and to describe the methods and practical operations used to achieve this. It is based on the analysis of building permits from the period 2001 to 2012 (source the City of Paris, Greco).
During these 12 years, 393,000 square metres of office space were transformed into habitable surface areas. Most of these were small operations involving from 200 to 1000 sq. metres, only two sites, at Porte de Choisy and rue de Bercy,  covered over 10,000 sq. metres. It is interesting to note that although the greater part of these transformations took place  in areas where there are the fewest offices , they did take place all over Paris even though office rents are always higher than those for housing. Finally, approximately 36% of the housing created through the transformation of offices is social housing SRU, either due to the initiative taken by public social housing organisations or by private organisations for projects located in areas with insufficient social housing.
