A fresh look at the economy in Paris – New economic models

This study has drawn up a preliminary picture of emerging economic models which are becoming established in the fabric of the City of Paris and the wider metropolitan area.
The subjects of this section of the study are: the circular economy, the social and inclusive economy and the collaborative economy.
After laying down a profile of these economies, the study focuses on examining where in particular they have become established in the territory.
It is clear that:
  • The notions of circular, social and inclusive, and collaborative are not fungible as one concept alone but they do interact and overlap;
  • In particular, they share civic values and the aim of “creating society”;
  • These economies produce a variety of new and alternative services, whose ultimate destination is the consumer and the inhabitant.
  • These new consumer services can be classified and initially mapped out as follows: Food, Travel, Coworking, Fab Labs, Waste recovery centres, Recycling centres and Skills swaps.
Their position in the fabric of the city varies according to the type of service but it is clear a network is becoming established in the territory of Paris.
In fact, these services, which have sometimes come into being because of new digital technologies, also need premises because they rely on sharing and social linking. The dense city seems to favour them for this reason.
An examination of their geographical location shows that in time they could become a positive indicator of territorial economic development: they are principally established in the east-central area of the metropolis
