Quality of life in the Parisian metropolis can be measured using particular individual characteristics of the inhabitants (income, housing and employment conditions…) together with other criteria relevant to living conditions in the territories, such as the environment, transport and access to leisure facilities.
About twenty indicators covering eleven aspects of the quality of life have revealed the advantages and disadvantages of life in Parisian districts and the communes in the inner suburbs. Air quality, cost of housing and availability of public transport seem to be the criteria which most differentiate these “territories of life”.
Four types of territory with a particular profile can be identified in the Parisian metropolis. Setting aside differences in income, the central territories are well-served by public transport and offer easy access to facilities and employment, as opposed to territories further from the centre which have better housing conditions and air quality.
