Platforms linking private individuals wanting to rent furnished tourist accommodation have in the space of a few years become major players in the tourist accommodation market in Paris and other large cities in the world.

With 36 million, Paris is today one of the main tourist destinations in the world, it is also the world leader in furnished rented accommodation. This offer differs from a hotel, and contributes to enhancing the city internationally. However the growth of this type of accommodation, most often proposed by platforms like Airbnb, Homeaway, Abritel…, is problematic because to a certain extent it impinges on the availability of main residences.
In recent years, similarly to Barcelona and New York, Paris has redefined its regulations to avoid housing being used for tourist rentals all year round without managing to stem the phenomenon, even if the growth of the number of furnished rentals for tourists has slowed down since 2018.
This note describes the extent of the phenomenon of furnished rented accommodation for tourists in Paris, recent developments and the impact it has on the life of Parisians. It also, through the use of maps, compares the situation in Paris with those in other major cities (New York, London, Amsterdam, Berlin, Lyon and Bordeaux), which are also faced with the explosion of furnished tourist accommodation
