A housing stock with 3.5 million units in Métropole du Grand Paris - extract of the diagnostic of the Metropolitan Housing and Accommodation Plan (PMHH)

To understand by whom the existing housing stock in Greater Paris -Metropole du Grand Paris- is occupied is a major issue when identifying the action levers and putting in place a policy specifically adapted to the situation. This note is an extract of the Metropolitan Housing and Accommodation Plan (PMHH) that Metropole du Grand Paris is currently drawing up. It describes the existing situation in MGP as well as the trends and evolution underway.

89% of housing units are main residences, however, this number has risen slightly more slowly than the housing stock as a whole. Their percentage of the whole housing stock reduced marginally during the recent period (2008-2013). The knock on effect of this drop means more housing units lie unoccupied, or more usually are second homes and temporary accommodation, part of which are short term, furnished rentals.

Another characteristic in Métropole du Grand Paris is that the proportion of home owners is lower than in the rest of the Ile-de-France Region. Out of the 3.1 million main residences in MGP 40% are occupied by their owners, the other households are shared between 33% tenants in privately owned accommodation, 24% social housing tenants and 3% are housed free of charge. Over the past few years, home ownership has slowed down while social housing has progressed and the private housing stock dropped very slightly and more notably changed its make up with an increase in furnished rented accommodation.
