In Ile-de-France, key workers live slightly closer to their work place
In Ile-de-France, due to the cost of accommodation, some employees are forced to live a long way, sometimes a very long way from their place of work. In response to this situation, the public authorities are considering the possibility of initiating a housing policy which would enable certain employees seen as key workers to live closer, given their responsibility for keeping the territory functioning properly.
This issue is the focus of this study. It has defined “key players” as including those working in particular in health, safety and education. Nearly 1.6 million employees in Ile-de-France are included in this definition, i.e. nearly one
in three working people in the region.
On the whole, key workers live a bit closer to their work place than other employees (9.4km on average as against 10.9km). On closer examination, it becomes clear that it is a certain section of key workers who live close to their zone of work. Some of these are more or less well-off professionals (doctors, dentists…), who own their own homes, others are less well-off (hospital service personnel, unskilled waste disposal workers, prison administrative supervisors…), who benefit from social housing. Those key workers who live a long way from their work place are, for example, public transport drivers (metro, RER…), or, to a lesser extent, police officers. Their work places are located for the most part in the centre of the conurbation whereas their places of residence are scattered throughout the region.
