Landscaping guidelines to help integrate projects for travellers' campsites into the Bois de Boulogne and Bois de Vincennes woods

Bois de Boulogne et de Vincennes, projets d'aires d'accueil des gens du voyage

In the listed sites of the Bois de Boulogne and the Bois de Vincennes, the Paris Land-Use Plan shows areas designated as campsites for travellers.

The City of Paris would like Apur, within the framework of its 2011 work programme, to identify ways of transforming the sites earmarked for these projects and to bring to light the principal landscaping guidelines to facilitate their integration by the project management team.

The sites in question are asphalt parking areas and localized landscaping improvements seem possible. In both the woods, the peripheral areas around existing sites also constitute obstacles which add to the splitting up of the woods.

They could be re-integrated into the landscape of the woods and be more open to the public. They could equally well become a way of creating new links connecting the woodland with the riverside Communes.

These notes outline possible paths to follow and put forward guidelines which take into consideration the scale of the major landscape elements of the woods. In order that the travellers’ campsites don’t become an additional factor in the break up of the woods and an element independent of their environmental context, they could be developed following these guidelines paying particular attention to their peripheries, their  close up visual impact and their relationship to their surroundings.

This forms part of the project manager’s job.

Since then, the idea of setting up sites in the woods to accommodate travellers has been abandoned
