The district around Montparnasse station is both a major transport hub and one of the most active business and cultural centres of the city, playing a major role in contributing to the dynamism of Paris and the Region. That said, the diagnosis set out in this study reveals a certain number of urban shortcomings which are blocking the development potential of the area as well as the flow of exchange.
The study recommends a comprehensive analysis about the future of the site. It emphasizes the huge potential of the area both above and below ground and examines questions principally relating to readjusting spaces reserved for different modes of transport, maintaining the large, green open spaces which are important on a Regional scale (Vercingetorix, Wall of the Farmers General), integrating the station and the commercial centre into the context of the district, and finally reducing of fragmentation of the urban fabric. It puts forward proposals outlining objectives for the re-development of the public space.
