New sites of cultural activity in the heart of the Parisian conurbation - Phase 1

Phase 1 - Live performance Arts and current trends in music

The fringes of the central concentration of cultural institutional facilities in Paris and its inner suburbs - la Petite Couronne - are overflowing with venues and activists, a phenomena which sprung up in France about 30 years ago and which has completely transformed the relationship with the inhabitants and the territories.

These venues, fore-runners of “new sites of cultural activity”, are flourishing and cultivating a fresh, creative relationship with the city whose central spaces they often remodel:  the cultural space becomes a public resource in as much as it offers, in addition to its strictly artistic output, a space for exchanges and meetings in a convivial and intergenerational environment. From a territorial point of view, these sites make up a coherent geographic network, which they expand by belonging to other networks or taking part in metropolitan festivals. On a pilot site (Paris 20th, Bagnolet, Montreuil), this group of activists, taken as a whole, have formed a powerful means of attraction for the Communes, who have taken this on board by implementing policies in support of the integration of artists and cultural enterprises in their territory. In conclusion, the study brings to light in particular the difficulties concerned with access, as well the low level of marketing and publicity of the products on offer. Where live shows are concerned, the artists have pointed out the lack of rehearsal space, which could, for example, be provided by existing public or private venues, perhaps shared with other bodies.
