The North-East Paris Park Promenade -Parc Promenade Paris Nord-Est-
Development of a major landscape system

By linking together a number of existing green spaces and others that are planned, it is possible to create a major,  27.4 hectare long, traffic-free, park promenade in the heart of the north-east area - Paris Nord-Est -.

Intersected by major road and rail infrastructures, the Paris Nord-Est sector, which lies north of the 18th and 19th districts, has been changing for over 20 years as a result of a dozen or so development and urban renewal projects being carried out. Today, these transformations are ongoing and aim to build a more resiliant territory, which is more open to neighbouring municipalities and better linked to the existing urban fabric by extending the continuity of the landscape on a metropolitan and local scale.

Within this context, Apur, together with the City of Paris, are exploring the possibility of a large park on the scale of Paris Nord-Est, designed around four objectives:

  • To enhance the long stretches of the conurbation that lie alongside transforming infrastructures and the city gateway areas by turning them into public squares.
  • To strengthen the biodiversity of selected reservoirs and pathways and plant vegetation on sites where it is lacking.
  • To plan sports and refreshing, cool itineraries linking the various facilities in Paris Nord-Est.
  • To facilitate social links through a network of parks and gardens shared by people living nearby, including newcomers and established local inhabitants.

The "Parc Promenade Paris Nord-Est" could gradually take shape associating various typologies of planted, green and cool areas: parks, gardens and squares like Chapelle Charbon and Charles Hermite, public spaces rendered peaceful and protected from road traffic like the  Place Rosa Park and Square Cesaria Evora, areas of refuge for biodiversity like the disused railway line - La Petite Ceinture -, the inner courtyards of housing blocks and private land plots that could be planted and open at certain times for new uses, the section of the Canal Saint-Denis at Porte de la Villette which can be opened up better to local neighbourhoods.
The articulation between these spaces would enable a landscape system to be created of nearly 52 hectares, of which 27 hectares is a continuous passage linking Porte de La Chapelle to Porte de La Villette and the Canal Saint-Denis.
