This Apur study presents an initial state of play of the various on-going changes concerning more sustainable food production and consumption. It takes into account what is on offer currently in Paris and its connections with the distribution system and production sites in Ile-de-France.

Good quality food and agricultural production go hand in hand. After a long period of absence of farms producing food in Ile-de-France and as a result of the dual need to both respond to consumer demand and reduce the carbon footprint of cities, we are witnessing a revival of this type of farming together with its distribution circuits.

At present, there are 245 sustainable points of sale to be found in Paris, to which can be added markets, food halls, over 120 direct producer-to-consumer networks and 15 hectares of outdoor and rooftop cultivation. As a result, over half the surface area of Paris is served by a sales outlet for products grown in Ile-de-France and the direct networks in the capital can call on more than 186 local, Francilian producers whose output bears witness to the agricultural richness and diversity which still existed up until the 1950s.

These recent changes are happening fast and Paris very recently signed a territorial pact of co-operation with neighbouring and rural territories, within the framework of a strategy for urban resilience.
