The project for the Seine embankments, currently being carried out by the City of Paris, takes into account the context of their exceptional role as national and world heritage.
This report was sent by Paris City Hall to the Ministry of Culture in order to present Unesco with the project and the way in which it takes into consideration the significant heritage value of the Seine embankments which have been listed as a world heritage site since 1991.
The project highlights the historical urban landscape with new view points from which to contemplate the River Seine, its sweeping perspectives, monuments, bridges … It also takes its place in the embankments' history which has always known how to adapt its uses to the great periods in history. It offers a more sustainable vision of the urban, river landscape notably by reducing pollution and giving more space to eco-friendly transport, to river transport and by encouraging biodiversity.
This living heritage will in the future be managed in a more active way than it is today by developing certain uses without changing its physical form. The project will allow the site to be open to everybody, all generations and all social classes.
Last but not least, it gives an opportunity to communicate better about the only Parisian site listed as world heritage.
The study, carried out in December 2011, refers to the carrying out of one part of the project on the Right and Left Banks during the summer of 2012. The opening of the Left Bank is at present planned for spring 2013.
