Results of the January 1st, 2015 census

On January 1st, 2015, the population of Paris was 2,206,488

The population of Paris declined in the period 2010 – 2015 (-0.3% per year), whereas it had been on an upward trend from 1999 on.

Eighteen out of the twenty districts recorded a drop in population, in particular in the 2nd, 7th and 8th districts. Only the 13th and 14th districts had more inhabitants in 2015 than in 2010.

The population decline in Paris can be accounted for mainly by a fall in the birth rate observed since 2010 and a rise in the proportion of unoccupied housing which includes vacant housing units, second homes and housing only occupied part of the time.

This note is an initial commentary on the results of the January 1st, 2015 population census published by the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (Insee).
