The study gives an up to date overview of the situation of retail outlets in Paris following the Covid-19 health crisis based on surveys carried out in April 2023. It also analyses the changes observed between 2020 and 2023.
In 2023, 60,846 shops, commercial services, bars and restaurants were listed in Paris. This figure reflects an extremely dense commercial fabric compared with the rest of the Greater Paris - Grand Paris Metropolis - and other large cities in France.
The data collected shows a sharp increase in the number of food shops, bars, cafes and restaurants, certain categories of emerging businesses such as those selling and repairing bicycles as well as thriving organic retailers. Paris’ commercial landscape is also marked by the decline of personal goods shops (ready to wear, shoe and jewellery shops) which face strong competition from e-commerce and changes in fashion consumption trends, particularly the rise in sales of second-hand clothes.
The vacancy rate of ground floor premises on Paris streets stands at 10.9%, a moderate rise since 2020 (+0,7 points) given the difficult period experienced following the health crisis.
