Santiago Poniente: urban development and heritage

Since 1990, a redefinition policy has been implemented in the commune of Santiago, Chile, the heart of an urban agglomeration of over 5 million inhabitants, to inverse the process of degradation, loss of competitiveness and depopulation of the past decades.

Santiago - Chili : quartier de Santiago Poniente

This policy has been extremely successful and is entering a second phase, which seeks to preserve the identity of the Santiago Poniente district. With the technical help of the Apur, the Santiago Public Works Department is responsible for drawing up a plan for urban development and the protection of national heritage. It endeavours to reconcile the preservation of heritage, the enhancement of the landscape and nuanced redevelopment.

This protection plan project is the basis for this publication, which is divided into three parts. The first retraces the major urban development phases within the city and the history of the Santiago Poniente district. The second part is devoted to the study on heritage. The last part puts forward proposals for regulatory modifications and protection of buildings, including maps that analyse the urban fabric.
