Following on from the study, begun by the Apur in 2006, on Parisian suburban cemeteries this report examines the situation of 109 cemeteries which were under the direction of 74 member municipalities of the Sifurep at the start of 2010.
It gives the results of a general survey and case studies with the aim of gaining better knowledge of the situation of these cemeteries in terms of management, burial options and facilities, development and heritage. Specific mapping indicates each particular issue linking it to its place and role in the dense metropolis.
This comparative approach allows the necessary tools to be arranged for monitoring the evolution of cemeteries. It also defines the principal issues linked to their evolution, whether these be directly linked to the domain of funerals (changing practices, burial options and facilities, their value as heritage) or to their wider urban, landscaping and above all environmental potential.
The content of the study is divided into two parts. The first has a global approach which includes the quantitative and qualitative processing of the study's results and identifies the main elements of the diagnosis and principal development objectives. The second, in the form of a collection of monographs, examines the cases of 28 municipal and inter-municipal cemeteries.
By providing tools for gaining knowledge and analysing, by defining the issues at stake in areas of management and projects, this study invites a shared diagnosis allowing better judgement in the future when considering the value of cemeteries within a metropolitan territory from which they should not be set apart.
The 28th monograph gives a more detailed study of the Joncherolles Inter-municipal Cemetery.
