A slice of city. Living in Paris or how to appreciate the quality of urban life

Carried out by a team made up of urbanists from Apur and anthropologists from the Architecture/Anthropological Laboratory, EAPLV, this study proposes an original approach to urban quality as seen by its inhabitants. The method, tested for the first time in the study, involves confronting the standard, statistical and cartographic representation of Paris with the representation of the city expressed by its inhabitants through what they say and their graphic images of the city. By combining both the anthropological and urbanistic approaches “quality indicators” were drawn up on two levels. The quality of life applied on the scale of the whole city shows that the density and diversity of its functioning, its social composition and its urban fabrics appear as positive values while the mono-functional, socially and morphologically homogenous sectors are most often linked to more negative values. When applied on a more precise and specific scale, families of places are highlighted and classified according to whether they match or mismatch the social indicators and those of urban services: “iconic places”, “places like a city”, “places like a village”, “places beyond local borders”, “overlooked places”… This study has enabled a method to be put in place which can be applied to territories in the region when need be. It could also become a tool for comparing the quality of life in one territory with that in another and consequently serve in assessing urban policies.
