Studies and thoughts on the future of the main radial roads

The slaughterhouses at La Villette in 1979
The main radial roads which link Paris to the Île-de-France and the rest of France and Europe are characterized by the historical role they play in the development and structuring of the territory. The challenges they pose today on a metropolitan scale go far beyond their function as roads for traffic and have a major impact on the territories they pass through. Based on the analysis of the recent transformations of the radial roads in the centre of this dense conurbation, the study questions their role as highways, the densificatin already underway and to come, and the place and role of the key players involved.
Four of these radial roads have been studied in particular (ex RN 2, 3, 305 et 7) and this work has been organised into three parts:
  • all these infrastructures put into their historical perspective up until the recent transformations
  • the current situation presented in the form of portraits of the four selected radial roads making it possible to compare the living spaces, travelling spaces, public spaces, and present day dynamics
  • Forward looking projects and approach. This third part specifies the way the radial roads are designed and could be transformed taking into account the reduction of traffic and the urban concentration of the project sections and their surrounding areas. Specific cartography and a number of organisational propositions, shown in cross section diagrams have been produced. These sketch out organisational scenarios of the space and integrate new modes of transport.
