Trees in the Greater Paris - Grand Paris Metropolis -
Towards a database that counts and identifies

Remote sensing data of vegetation based on aerial images enable a census to be made of the greening cover on the scale of Grand Paris Metropolis. For the first time, a database counts trees, whether they be in public or private space.

Remote sensing of vegetation based on aerial images is a technique that makes the most exhaustive census possible of the vegetation that covers a territory.

It has been used for many of Apur’s work projects since 2005, and regularly updated photographs provide ever more detailed knowledge of vegetation on the entire 814 km² of Grand Paris Metropolis.

Remote sensing makes it possible to know the greened surface area (338 km² in Grand Paris Metropolis) and this coupled with a digital model of the terrain, to find out the height of vegetation, generally presented and utilised in 3 classified heights: herbaceous, shrubs and trees. Apur has sought to use these data to make an initial estimate of the trees in the Metropolis, this knowledge is often insufficient for local authorities in sectors that they do not manage, such as private land parcels. The technique, recently developed during the work process, has some limitations which are mentioned at the end of this document.
