Hospital staff, shopkeepers, logistics workers, maintenance personnel, home-helps, educational personnel, etc., 1.9 million people hold these “essential” jobs in order to meet the vital day-to-day needs of Ile-de-France inhabitants. Where do these workers live, for whom living close to their work place is particularly important? What are their housing conditions?

The Covid-19 pandemic has bought to light the essential role of certain workers who supply the everyday, vital needs of the population. The Paris Region Institute, the Ile-de-France Regional  Health Observatory and the Paris Urbanism Agency have proposed a definition for these workers “day-to-day essential workers”. Therein, three categories are distinguished: “front line” workers, “front line relay” workers and “day-to-day public services”. The study on these workers is organised in two publications. This one focuses on the geography of their work place in relation to where they live, the other analyses their profiles and work and living conditions (Apur note n° 200).
