Working population, employment, unemployment – Human resources of an economic capital

Working population, employment, unemployment
Paris has a large working population.
The rate of employment is 76% for people aged between 15 – 64 as opposed to 75% in Ile-de-France and 72% in France.
Young adults have a lower rate of employment because of the high proportion of students. On the other hand, there are more older people in work, in particular women aged 50 and over. In recent years, the number of those working in “upper management and the professions” has shown an increase at the same time as the number of manual workers and employees has decreased.
These changes have gone hand in hand with a rise in the level of qualifications. 63% of working Parisians are higher education graduates as against 43% in Ile-de-France. In 2012, the rate of unemployment went up for the fourth year running.  At the same time, the number of people looking for work (+5% in 2012) has risen more slowly than in Ile-de-France (+7.2%) and in mainland France (8.5%). People aged 50 and over are in the category most affected (+13% in 2012). The total number of jobs, after a sharp decline during the 1990s, stabilised between 2000 and 2010.
Henceforward, nearly a quarter of the jobs in the capital can be categorised as strategic, containing a strong decision-making element.
