In 2022, at the request of the City of Paris and with the support of the Paris Family Benefit Office (CAF), Apur included the updating of the socio-demographic portrait of young people in Paris in its work programme. In this new edition, the portrait is extended to the Greater Paris - Grand Paris Metropolis - and covers diverse themes linked to young people’s housing conditions, their professional integration as well as their mobility and civic commitment.

This young population represents almost a million people, on the scale of Grand Paris, out of a total of 7.1 million inhabitants. The majority of 16 to 25 year olds are studying (69% in Paris and 65% in Grand Paris Metropolis). Almost a quarter of them (22%) have jobs and a smaller proportion are neither studying, undergoing training, nor working (9% in Paris and 13% in Grand Paris Metropolis).
In addition to young residents, the number of young people present during the daytime, to work or study is even greater. The daily flow doubles the number of young people in Paris, leading to the intense use and high pressure on certain facilities and public spaces.

This study emphasises the issue of housing which remains central with the increasing difficulties for young people who want to live alone, particularly those born in Grand Paris who want to leave the family home. Nearly half of the 25 year olds born in Paris (46%) still lived with their parents in 2018, compared to only one-third (32%) in 1999.
The study also highlights new issues related to the health crisis and its multiple effects, within an age group which has been profoundly affected. While the recovery in the employment sector shows positive trends, certain developments remains uncertain. The crisis has particularly shed light on areas of mental health, with warning signals among professionals and an increase in requests for psychological support, as well as issues linked to the insecurity of student life and more generally issues concerning the most precarious young people and those with fewest qualifications. In this crisis context, the desire to be involved remains strong among young people in Paris, particularly concerning housing issues, students’ living conditions, the environment and culture.
