Palliative care is defined by the  Institut National du Cancer as "all the care and support necessary for patients during and following the illness". It aims at improving the quality of life of patients by meeting their diverse needs: pain relief and psychological support for patients and their caregivers, health, social and administrative advice and support and the promotion of lifestyles that favour good health, etc.

The first part of the study presents elements of the epidemiological and institutional context linked to cancer prevention and treatment services in Grand Paris.
The second focuses on supportive oncology care, using an inventory drawn up by Apur, based on existing resources, exchanges with experts and a questionnaire addressed to structures involved in this area of healthcare.

The players questioned expressed certain needs related to epidemiological dynamics and pointed out several levers for reinforcing the current offer. Their feedback is summed up around six issues in the summary of the study:

  • Reinforce prevention and enhance the oncological palliative care provision;
  • Promote the wider use of supportive care and strengthen the offer;
  • Improve the management of pain, sexual disorders and fertility preservation;
  • Increase social and professional support for patients;
  • Develop the offer for children, adolescents and young adults, men and patients in advanced stages of the illness;
  • Meet needs during the "post-cancer" phase.
