Ulaanbaatar, 2nd International Architecture and Urbanism Workshop, September 20th – October 2nd, 2014. Mission report – Workshop minutes

Ulaanbaatar, 2nd International Architecture and Urbanism Workshop
Mongolia is opening its doors and this development, together with the fact that public institutions and local government, which now includes an elected mayor, have been reformed, a land law has been voted in and the urbanism master plan approved, have created a situation favourable to the development of long-lasting collaboration and the strengthening of economic and cultural exchanges between France and Mongolia.
Against this promising background, an unprecedented Franco-Mongolian partnership has been established, between, on the French side, the Higher National School of Architecture, Paris and La Villette (ENSAPLV) and the Paris Urbanism Agency (Apur), and on the Mongolian side, Ulaanbaatar City Council, the Ulaanbaatar Urbanism Institute, (which is in charge of managing urban development for the City of Ulaanbaatar) and the Faculty of Architecture at the Mongolian University of Science and Technology (MUST).
Following on from the first International Architecture and Urbanism Workshop in 2013 in Ulaanbaatar, the second workshop took place over two weeks in September, 2014.
Several initiatives were put into action between September 20th – October 2nd:
  • French and Mongolian students took part in an intensive survey and orientation workshop looking at particular urban situations, in order to get an understanding of related urban issues and put forward ideas for change and guidelines for possible development projects.
  • This fieldwork was supervised on site by teachers from the two Schools of Architecture, an Apur expert and an expert from the Master Planning Agency of Ulaanbaatar.
  • A seminar presenting the activities of the 2014 Workshop was held at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Mongolia in the presence of the Dean of the Faculty, Ulaanbaatar City Council and the French Embassy.
  • An exhibition of the work done during the 2013 Workshop was opened at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Mongolia.
  • Meetings with the Ulaanbaatar Technical Departments outlining possible ways in which the French technical teams, in this case Parisian, and technical teams from the Mongolian capital could collaborate in the domain of urban management and development.
